How does learning at Primer work?

Our approach to teaching and learning.

How Students Learn at Primer

At Primer, we believe every student can succeed when they're challenged at the right level, supported by caring educators, and given opportunities to apply what they're learning in meaningful ways.

Because every child learns differently, we don't expect every student to move through the same material at the same pace. Instead, educators meet students where they are, providing targeted instruction and support so they can build mastery before moving on to more advanced concepts. It's common for students in the same classroom to be working on different skills, allowing each child to continue making steady progress.

Rather than focusing on how much time a student spends on a topic, we focus on how well they understand it. Students demonstrate mastery before advancing, helping them build a strong academic foundation, close learning gaps, and develop confidence in their abilities.

Throughout the day, learning takes many forms. Students participate in small-group instruction with educators, literacy and math lessons, independent practice, collaborative discussions, hands-on projects, and opportunities to reflect on their goals and progress. This balance helps students strengthen both their academic skills and the independence they'll use throughout their lives.

Technology plays an important role in supporting learning, but it never replaces great teaching. Students use digital tools to practice skills, access lessons, and monitor their progress, while educators use that information to personalize instruction, celebrate growth, and provide additional support or challenge when needed.

One of the most distinctive parts of a Primer education is Pursuits. These interdisciplinary, project-based learning experiences bring together subjects like science, social studies, literacy, math, technology, civic education, and the arts through real-world challenges and student interests. As students work through these projects, they develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while seeing how classroom learning connects to everyday life.

We also believe students learn best when they take ownership of their education. As they grow, students learn how to set goals, manage responsibilities, monitor their progress, and reflect on their learning. These habits help them become confident, self-directed learners who are prepared for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Families are an important part of that journey. Through PrimerOS and the Primer App, families can view academic progress, attendance, schedules, and school updates while staying connected with educators. By working together, families and educators create a strong partnership that supports every student's growth.

At its core, Primer combines personalized learning, strong relationships, and meaningful real-world experiences. Our goal is not only to help students achieve academic success, but also to help them develop the curiosity, confidence, and independence they'll carry with them long after they leave our classrooms.
